A Dream of Summer

The garden soil that slept beneath the snow
Soaked in the sun, absorbing energy
While seeds began to germinate and grow,
And leaves began to bud on every tree.
Mud season, even, seemed to be just past;
No muddy paws required constant baths.
Instead, the grass and crocus had grown fast,
Our dogs raced happily on worn, dry paths.
Somehow the Summer had come overnight!
I stood out in the sun and sweet warm breeze
While all around me hummingbirds took flight
And shared the flowering sweetness with the bees.
But when I woke, the snow banks still remained,
So by imagination, hope’s sustained.
