Semi-Sonnet for Our Little Wild Rabbit

Her nightly paw prints in the snow,
The one thing softer, tell me clear
She likes the apples, pears and greens
I set in the cold night for her.
When summer comes and she’s had young,
No paw prints will show where they’ve been
But we’ll share lettuces, and chard
And parsley–all good green things then.
And, if I’m lucky and very still,
At dawn or dusk or even night,
I’ll see her little tribe at play
And be repaid for all I gave.
The hoped for sight of kits at play
Will take me through one more cold day.
